For many people Fall is a time of year that signifies falling leaves, cooler temperatures, pumpkin patches, and the spirit of Halloween! I enjoy the Fall as much as the next person but for me it brings another point of significance, my yearly reminder that I am growing older by the minute!
Halloween always is a time of celebration for me as my birthday lands on the 30th of October. As people are prepping costumes, carving pumpkins, and decorating their doorsteps I am thinking about what this birthday brings and how much closer to that “dreaded” number 30 I am becoming! (1 more year!)
Despite the normal pressures to feel as though getting older is a right of passage, I prefer to leave the “older” designation to a mindset or metal maturation and believe that my body is truly much younger! I no longer fear what another year may bring or worry about reaching that “old” age of 30, but embrace this time in my life when I’ve reached a point where goals are becoming accomplishments and age brings thoughts of prosperity, wisdom, and new fulfilling challenges!
As I’ve grown older I have had the revelation that birthdays are a time that need to be celebrated and utilized as tools to reflect on the challenges you have faced, opportunities you’ve realized, and memories that have been made with friends and loved ones. Looking back on the year that’s been can help us learn what mistakes we may have made and allow us to learn from those mistakes and identify what goals we look to reach in the year ahead.
I find myself focusing now on how I can improve my life, grow my spirituality, and become a better husband, father, and son! I no longer fear what pitfalls I may be faced with as I age but embrace the many things I have to be thankful for! Looking forward to watching my daughter grow up, spending quality time with Jacki and my other family members, and improving my health, nutrition, and fitness is what I look forward to as the years pass by.
Taking the time to alter our perspective on milestones like birthdays can do wonders for improving our outlook and changing our attitude about our circumstances. So often I see people fail before they even begin to try as their attitudes towards the tasks or goals at hand start out completely wrong! How can we be successful at ventures we want to achieve when we already are questioning our commitment or level of success before the endeavor even begins? The obvious answer to that rhetorical question is YOU CAN’T!
This year as my birthday comes around I’m challenging myself once again to look at all the POSITIVE things that come as we grow older! I choose to embrace my shortcomings and work towards improving myself one step at a time. I am making the choice to enjoy the day to day issues that may arise and view them as learning experiences that are helping me reach my goals as I age. Please don’t allow yourself to fall victim to a negative attitude that poisons your life slowly! Aging is a beautiful treasure that allows our eyes and minds to open itself to new opportunities, growth, and experiences that constantly shape who we are as an individual. On my birthday, I’ll be enjoying my age, one second at a time!
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” -Mark Twain
