The new 21st century model:  ‘Well-Being’

Well-Being49

It is my desire to share knowledge and compliment the ‘Bagel Presentation’.  So here are links to articles that can help illustrate and give examples to anyone and everyone who desires improved QOL.  I see this as an open source project because together our collective family changes the world.

Listed below are the ‘Fantastic Five’ components of our model I share in our presentation

Behaviors-

Happiness                                               Achievement                                   Success

Rest                                                           Meditation                                       Rejuvenation

Education                                                 Psychology                                       Health

Vitamins                                                   Supplements                                  Whole food

Exercise                                                     Functional fitness                         Active living

Medicine-

Integrative Medicine-Dr. Andrew Weil–

Integrative Medicine (Dr. Andrew Weil),Integrative medicine (or integrative health) is the combination of the practices and methods of alternative medicine with conventional medicine.

Complimentary & Alternative Medicine Including-

Naturopathic, Chiropractic, Holistic, Homeopathy, Herbalism, Acupuncture

Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) Complementary medicine is alternative medicine used together with conventional medical treatment in a belief, not established using the scientific method, that it “complements” (improves the efficacy of) the treatment is any practice that is put forward as having the healing effects of medicine, but is not founded on evidence gathered using the scientific method.

  • Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) Complementary medicine is alternative medicine used together with conventional medical treatment in a belief, not established using the scientific method, that it “complements” (improves the efficacy of) the treatment.
  • Naturopathic-Naturopathy or naturopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine employing a wide array of “natural” treatments, including homeopathy, herbalism, and acupuncture, as well as diet and lifestyle counseling.
  • Holistic medicine-Holistic health(or holistic medicine) is a diverse field of alternative medicine[1] in which the “whole person” is focused on, not just the malady itself.  Chiropractic, massage, mindfulness,

Technologies and Science-

Biomedical–

The application of the natural sciences, especially the biological and physiological sciences, to clinical medicine.

Bioengineering–

Also called biomedical engineering. the application of engineering principles and techniques to problems in medicine and biology, as the design and production of artificial limbs and organs.

Bioinformatics–

Is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to study and process biological data

fMRI–

A functional neuroimaging procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow.

Genomics–

A branch of biotechnology concerned with applying the techniques of genetics and molecular biology to the genetic mapping and DNA sequencing of sets of genes or the complete genomes of selected organisms, with organizing the results in databases, and with applications of the data (as in medicine or biology).

The Human Micro Biome–

Epigenetics–

– Strongly suggests that what we experience, consume, and encounter from the moment we are conceived matters.  Genes turned “on” and turned “off” when we are exposed to certain chemicals, man-made poisons, or—perhaps most surprisingly—emotional experiences, can make us more or less susceptible to particular health problems.

Yes epigenetics, strictly defined, is about heritable changes in gene expression.

Wellness and its Eight Dimensions-

  1. Emotional-Awareness of feelings, feeling positive and enthusiastic about life. It is important to pay attention to self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the development of inner resources so you can learn and grow from experiences.
  2. Spiritual-Your personal sense of purpose, attitudes, beliefs, philosophies. Spiritual wellness allows you to develop a set of values that help you seek meaning and purpose. Spirituality can be represented in many ways, for example, through relaxation or religion. But being spiritually well means knowing which resources to use to cope with issues that come up in everyday life.
  3. Financial-Involves the process of learning how to successfully manage financial expenses.  Money plays a critical role in our lives and not having enough of it impacts health as well as academic performance. Financial stress is repeatedly found to be a common source of stress and anxiety.
  4. Physical-Conventional aspects of healthy living, awareness of negative effects of smoking, drugs, alcohol abuse, as well as emphasis on nutrition and fitness. Physical wellness relates to maintaining a healthy body and seeking care when needed. Physical health is attained through exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep and paying attention to the signs of illness and getting help when needed.
  5. Environmental-The physical surroundings, stress eliminating. Environmental wellness encourages you to respect the delicate balance between the environment and yourself. Respect for other living things in our environment is just as necessary as respect for the physical environment itself.
  6. Intellectual-Working towards lifelong learning in any area. Intellectual wellness involves having an open mind when you encounter new ideas and continuing to expand your knowledge. It encourages active participation in scholastic, cultural and community activities.
  7. Occupational– Is about enjoying your occupational endeavors and appreciating your contributions. This dimension of wellness encourages personal satisfaction and enrichment in one’s life through work.
  8. Social– Personal relationships with family, friends and colleagues. Social wellness helps you perform social roles effectively and comfortably, and create a support network. This dimension of wellness allows you to not only develop encouraging relationships with peers, but also intimate relationships with romantic partners.
