Avoiding “Rip Van Winkle-ness”

Posted on March 15, 2015 Written by Thomas Matt Leave a Comment

Washington Irving wrote the short story “Rip Van Winkle” in 1819. It tells the story of a man who falls asleep for twenty years, awakens and finds a completely changed world.  In a way we boomers fall into this mystery, where did the years go?rip_van_winkle_1

Here is my perspective-

Giving time to everyone, children, spouses, parents and spending time working, attending children’s after school events, professional organizations, classes, meetings.  Late nights, early mornings do any of these sound familiar?

I know I have been there and done many of these;  the big question is “now what”?

Time to awaken and give to yourself!achieve_fitness_1

For me it was becoming accountable.  Admitting that my poor lifestyle choices were leading me down the path to self- destruction, the drinking, drugging, and eating bad foods needed to end.

Sobriety, it is sweet!

Allow yourself to find your spark that enables your dreams, things you may have postponed or overlooked earlier in your life due to “busyness”!

According to the nonprofit group Encore.org, as many as 9 million people aged 44 to 70 are getting paid for work that combines their personal passion with a social purpose.  Also an additional 31 million are interested in making the jump into “encore careers.”  Our time has arrived to make the changes that facilitate our transition into our next phase of life, walking through the front door of the ‘Refirement Zone’.

Here are some tips that helped me toward self-improvement and a happier life-

  • Creating additional time, going to bed ten minutes earlier, getting up five minutes earlier adds up
  • Making physical activities more important and fun; stand, stretch, walk
  • Improving quality and length of sleep
  • Eating more whole foods
  • Drinking more water, eliminating soda
  • Knowing personal numbers such as- blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol
  • Making a ‘life gratitude list’
  • Finding mentors
  • Sobriety

Together we rock, ‘Boomers who Rock’!

Peace

The Reason I Want to Live to be 100

Posted on February 15, 2015 Written by Thomas Matt 2 Comments

Aging is not without its challenges, and I’ve heard from far too many people that they don’t look forward to growing older. Today everything is changed: Social Security and Medicare face deep problems, traditional pensions are almost obsolete, interest rates on saving are pitiful and the 2008 financial meltdown is still relatively fresh and frightful for many. And I’ll leave it to you to insert your own, personal worries about your health.

So what will we do to make growing older with dignity more attractive?

With the right team you can focus on your growth through others accomplishments; this is the whole point of what we do.  For example our relationship with Masterpiece Living® and my pal Dr. Roger Landry, utilizing our positive energy and attracting others with like positivity has brought us closer, here are their thoughts.

Is 80 the new 50?   eighty_2

If you work on improving your quality of life, and commit to improving a little bit every day, I believe 80 can be the new 50.

You just need to believe in yourself, and find the right support system.

“Masterpiece Living® is a multi-specialty group who is committed to older adults aging in a better way. How we make that happen is the basis of the strong partnerships we build with like-minded organizations. In addition Masterpiece leads by doing the following-

  • We work with leading experts in the field of aging.masterpiece_living
  • We have a proven track record of success.
  • Your journey is our top priority.
  • We are continually evolving.
  • We are part of something bigger.”

Find more at-http://www.mymasterpieceliving.com/

If we are going to live longer than we must invest in skills and stronger healthier bodies we will remain employed, active, happier and self-reliant.  Research suggests that we will remain in better health when we delay or eliminate the retirement mindset;  we can remain better connected with friends and co-workers as well as remaining physically more active, generate a paycheck and not dip into our savings;  building a larger nest egg of not only financial rewards but experiential.

The trends are clearly here, and with a small amount of planning, inspiration and teamwork maximized QOL well past 90 is totally achievable.  We must have a plan, and we must think ‘transitional’.transistional_1

Here is the good news.  We’re living longer and, for the most part, healthier, than in the past. Both our mental and physical functioning in later life now exceeds that of our forefathers and foremothers. My own parents, born in 1937 and 1941 faced a life expectancy of somewhere in the neighborhood of 55-65 at birth.  They are both now still alive and doing great in their 70’s.  Surviving to age 70 was rare in my grandfather’s era, now those days are long gone for us MiddleLiving adults, (45-75) and SuperiorSeniors (76 and up) only time will tell.

I like to think  that reaching the age of  80 will be viewed as “the new 50” with  centenarians (age 100+) our  fastest growing age group embracing the Boomers Rock mentality of the ReFirement Zone and Masterpiece Livings ® believing in Dr. Landry’s four qualities, the physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual, growth and mastering the process of maturation beyond fifty is exceedingly doable.

Our bus is gassed up and we are going on a glorious trip!

We must accept the reality that it’s now much more expensive to retire (whatever that is) than it used to be. If we view this as a challenge and given that living longer has a completely changed dynamic , we can plan better, move more, eat smarter and healthier,  love many, and share, a lot!

Clearly our glass is more than half full, the 21st century holds new adventures, experiences, and a radically different perspective on the ability to age with enhanced juice!

The end of retirement is already prompting a global reconsideration of how we think about the life cycle. For economic growth and greater security, we’ll need to find new ways to work to 100+ while investing for the long haul in our health, mental faculties, friends, neighbors and society. Fortunately, with fewer younger workers around, employers will need to keep us on the job.

Think about this-

A baby born today could live to age 150 or beyond, a reality that will drastically alter your perspective about your own, as well as your children’s and grandchildren’s retirements.  Leaving a legacy for our grandchildren rather than spending down your hard earned assets in an assisted living facility is not going to work.  90% of all MiddleLiving/SuperiorSeniors want to age in place, and we can make this the norm, not the exception.

Train for a marathon of longevity and win the game of life, together we change the world!change_the_world_1

Our Future is NOW!

Posted on February 8, 2015 Written by Thomas Matt Leave a Comment

Economic Development Needs Us!

Jim Collins wrote that one of our inherent problems of society is that we feel being good enough is just that, good enough.  That not throwing caution to the wind and working harder to become great is sometimes perceived as not worth the effort.

I am here to say that our future is NOW and becoming GREAT will be our legacy!

To be successful in life we have to recognize our weaknesses, and ruthlessly eliminate them from our lfuture_is_now_1ives.  Success is about accumulating more positives in your life, setting unlimited beliefs, and carrying a positive attitude that attracts like souls into your world.  This is what I am doing and you can do this as well!

Since the radio program has become a stable weekend show these past months on WGHN 1370 AM in Grand Haven, Michigan, we have been introduced to a new level of quality, engaged community-leading Middle-Living and Superior-Seniors.  This foundation and nucleus of an All-Star team is led by Brigit Hassig, Executive Director of Four Pointes-Center for Successful Aging, and Dr. Roger Landry author of ‘Live Long, Die Short’ and President of Masterpiece Living®, a group of multidisciplinary specialists in aging who partner with communities to assist in becoming destinations for continued growth.

Economic growth can be enhanced by utilizing potential and the human capital that  Middle-Living/ Superior-Seniors possess. These people are valuable resources that can enable cities and regions of our country to have enduring success.  By recruiting, enabling and encouraging this large group of citizens, we enhance and exploit for the betterment of our local cities, regions, states and national economic growth and keep a valued asset of mature adults invested and on our team.  As Brigit wrote in an editorial recently, “the aging field is evolving, becoming aware of not only who older adults are, and the skills and expertise they possess, but also helping to facilitate who they might become”. These qualities must be acknowledged and exploited to continue the advancement of our country.

Disregarding, even disrespecting our home grown talent is silly and foolish, it does not facilitate greatness. It enables and encourages a vacuum to occur in our society, removing valuable talent when we need it most.  We worry about our children graduating from college and moving away from home, the well-known brain drain, but we could care less about the wealth of talent that Middle-Living adults and our Superior-Seniors possess.  The age drain not only contributes to economic decline, it accelerates it.

We should view our society in a way that encourages our aging population to stay in our cities, live vibrant lives, and assist in the raising of our upcoming generations’ and their children. Mentoring, teaching and sharing the responsibilities are all of the qualities that make societies great.

Economic growth is dependent on retaining the  wealth of knowledge and experiences possessed by older adults.  Not discarding it.     live_long_book_1

How do we accomplish this?

In ‘Live Long-Die Short’ Dr. Landry shares his thoughts.

“Remember the three key characteristics that define successful aging: low risk of disease and disease related disability, high mental and physical function, and active engagements with life.  When we commit to having these as the defining characteristics of our lifestyle, we are moving toward a better aging experience”.

As I see the growth and rebirth of my home state of Michigan, it is truly a renaissance of economic excitement and adventure.

With Michigan State University and its stewardship of multiple high level projects, for example,  the building of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), the Grand Rapids campus of the College of Human Medicine, which  enabled what is now known as the ‘Medical Mile’, and the East-Michigan public health program in Flint, the need for intellectual talent has never been greater.  Mid-Michigan is just a microcosm of our society at large, the need for talent in our country has never been greater.

We will only become as great as our greatest leaders blaze trails.  As my friend and colleague Brigit Hassig stated, “with community awareness our country can be a very different place to age-where wisdom of older adults is valued and matters”.

Believing that you are needed, wanted, desired, respected and embraced adds value, builds a feeling of self-efficacy and confidence.  It encourages our experienced talent to stay home, not fly south, and lose interest in the future.  This is the 21st century and we no longer say retirement around here, it is walking through the front door of the ReFirement Zone baby!

Improving our aging experience by collaborating and working as a stronger team will enhance our local, regional, state and national economic standing.  These actions will have a ripple effect and improve our federally funded entitlement and health-care obligations, programs that are in desperate need of revitalization and recapitalization.  Doing this can enhance, encourage and accelerate social positivity and economic robustness.

Being part of something special, now we are talking!  Be bold, be better, lead change,  the future truly is NOW!

Step up and become part of the solution, you are valued and you are GREAT!

Peace

The Devil Made Me Buy It with Kirk Spano and Empowerment with Jessie Riley

Posted on November 18, 2014 Written by Thomas Matt Leave a Comment

Matt-show-description

Season 4 Episode 4 — November 17, 2014

Hosted by Tom Matt

Episode Description

This week’s combination of topics will include Kirk Spano, Financial Fitness Guru and code named the Milwaukee Mauler,  Kirks  financial analysis is done in the ‘Boomers Rock’ way, that is, out of the box and entertaining.  Never boring and always informative!

Our Grand Haven Boomers Rock Local guest is Jessie Riley, Lifestyle Coordinator at our favorite GH location Four Pointes.

As the owner of Blue Mound Asset management in Milwaukee, and writer for Market Watch Kirk is serious about what he does. I titled Kirk’s visit ‘The Devil Made Me Buy It’ for a reason, we make silly spending decisions all of the time, Kirk helps us decide what is important.  He will talk about the concept of ‘leverage’ and how we all can increase it and help ourselves at the same time.

Jessie Riley is really a  Middle-Living adult in a millennial body, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science and Gerontology from Central Michigan University, Jessie and I share a fondness for the word Empowerment.  The first thing I had to ask this super upbeat dynamo is, “What the heck is a lifestyle coordinator anyway”?

The Masterpiece Living® model and coordinator for the national pilot within Four Pointes.  Jessie works in lockstep with Brigit Hassig to shift the perception of aging in the Tri-Cities area of Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Fruitport to a more positive outlook.

This show is a compounding of electricity between the ‘Mauler’ (Spano) and his point of view, followed by Jessie the ‘Lifestyle Coordinator’ and her empowering perspective.  Two diverse and massive topics for all of us, Middle-Living, money and engagement, you will not be sorry.

In this weeks episode we discuss-

  • Depth of credit issues
  • Large financial obligations
  • Financial planning
  • Water in the price
  • Market watch
  • Informed financial choices
  • Adult culture shift
  • What do we want for ourselves as we age
  • Master Piece Living™
  • Middle-Living
