Big and small, nature and nurture, growth and girth!………all these things can describe our lives and the things in it. But most importantly the last option, growth and girth are two words that describe the nature of the foods we consume on an everyday basis.
Growth? By growth I mean lean muscle development and fat loss. Growth in terms of feeling better, looking better, and making quality food choices that fuel your activity throughout the day and give us the energy we need to have that juice and vitality that drives our lives!
Girth? A disgusting word that describes failure! Girth is meant to describe the bad choices in our lives along with bad food options that derail our health and wellness program while making us feel fatigued, grouchy, and unmotivated!
Every day as we move through our daily tasks and responsibilities we face hundreds and hundreds of choices that are dependent on the decisions we made previously and ultimately effect the decisions we will make in the future. At times it becomes extremely difficult to look ahead and think about the effect we may have with every decision we make, but when it comes to our food choices we must remain cognizant of how this particular meal will affect our bodies on a cellular level!
As we choose to consume or choose to avoid certain foods or meals altogether throughout the day we must view these choices independently of what we’ve done thus far. Falling off the wagon for a whole day can be avoided by realizing that we may have made a bad choice for breakfast or lunch but we can finish the day strongly by choosing that healthy option for dinner!
At times when I may make a bad decision on my food intake I feel guilty and know that the importance of getting back on track and making that healthy meal for the family at dinner can really do wonders to my mindset and help me stay motivated to get up tomorrow and be at my best! So often I hear my clients rationalize a bad meal or dessert by saying “well, I’ve already eaten badly today so I’ll just start again tomorrow”. That type of rationalization can be detrimental to everything we are trying to accomplish with our nutritional goals.
When planning your meals for tomorrow take the time to contemplate whether the food your consuming is food for growth or food for girth! The pleasure gained mentally is only temporary while the disappointment and discomfort physically can toil much longer on our psyche!
